Fretting Wear

Glossary Term

Definition and Purpose

Fretting wear is a type of damage that occurs when two surfaces undergo small amplitude oscillatory motion in contact with each other. This motion causes the removal of fine particles from the surfaces, often leading to localized oxidation known as friction oxidation. The phenomenon is particularly relevant in scenarios where components are subject to vibration or repetitive movement, resulting in progressive material degradation and potential equipment failure.
